Edible Art

My grandmother used to say "anybody can bake but only a few can make it edible"

In the beginning, I didn't understand what those words means as every time she cooks or make desserts, they turned out to be not only edible but delicious. Most of the time, my grandfather would lift me up on a stool or on the kitchen sink so I could watch granny cook. It was always a pleasure whenever I would watch her in the kitchen. She would make it look as if cooking was just as easy as breathing. I wasn't aware at that time that my passion for cooking and baking was starting to be developed. I enjoyed looking at how my grandmother turned simple food into an art by just few snips, cut, dash and slash. Since then, I promised myself that someday, I will serve some good food and I will make them look pretty just like what and how my grandmother used to make it. What can I say?... I'm a Lola's Girl ( grandmother's girl).

Just a year ago, I tried cake sculpting and decorating... I thought it would be an easy breezy thing, but boy I was so wrong!  I started observing real objects, like the contour, the basic profile and texture too. I have developed some knowledge on how to replicate some objects into cakes.

Making edible art may sound like an easy thing to do but in all honesty, it is not. It takes lots of patience, perseverance and and real passion towards cake decorating. If you are married, you would need lots of patience and understanding from your spouse as you need to spend lots of times honing your talent, and it means less time with your hubby or wife. But don't worry as it is just in the beginning. As the basic knowledge had been instilled, then no need to spend too much time practicing everyday.

I still have a long way to go and a lot more to learn, but I believe I am traversing the right path already. I enjoy what I do and I love the smile my cakes bring to people.

In the photo is an example of my edible art. It is an all edible and handmade sugar figurine. She is Divina the Flamenco Dancer. She is made from a mixture of gumpaste and modelling chocolate.

  1. I have been an art lover since early childhood. I never wanted anyone to eat the icing flowers! O.o
